Prerequisite: Intro to Nonviolent Communication workshop or basic understanding of NVC- Contact Cory if you have questions about this.
Nonviolent Communication is a practice. We begin with a more superficial understanding of ourselves, feelings, needs, our relationships, and as we gain experience, we circle back through the same themes, each time going a little deeper, seeing nuance with greater clarity than we may have before.
Deepening Nonviolent Communication invites participants to explore observation, feelings, needs, and requests in ways not explored in introductory sessions and classes. Participants can sign up for all five sessions or individual sessions.
The class is highly participatory, with an emphasis on learning key assumptions of NVC and practicing different skills each week. Themes for the week are as follows:
April 9: Recognizing and Appreciating Needs: Needs are at the heart of NVC. The more we tune into needs, the more we are able to move from shame, blame, and judgment to empathy. Let’s get tunin’!
April 16: Understanding Anger: Every emotion is useful when we approach it with curiosity. Anger can be particularly informative. In this session, we’ll go beneath the surface of anger.
April 30: Gaining Perspective in Conflict with Another: In this session, we play! Role play, that is. Each participant will choose a situation, past or present, in which they’d like to broaden their understanding and with guidance will role play through it.
May 7: From Choice-less to Choice-full: Sometimes we do things because we believe we have no choice and yet rarely is that true. In this session we’ll look at ways of embracing the choices we have in “choice-less” situations.
May 14: Encouraging Self-Understanding: Cultivating empathy begins with ourselves. It is an ongoing practice to free ourselves of self-violence and self-demands. Let’s practice!
