I am a creative work in progress. The progress depends in large part on my willingness to let the Creator work through me. Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, a 12-week process of creative recovery, has been an instrumental tool in helping me get out of my own way.
Twice in 2018 I went through The Artist’s Way process. Both times I tuned into a wisdom deeper than my own. I got clearer about my needs and wants. I explored my personal story and discovered personal healing. I experienced beautiful synchronicities as I trusted in something beyond my understanding. The Artist’s Way led me to leaps in my creative process. The first time I discovered a gift for creating “heart portraits,” intuitive drawings of hearts that give insights into people’s hearts and lives. The second time I had my first art show of works I had created over several years.
How did all that happen? What does the process look like? The Artist’s Way process is dependent on two basic practices: morning pages and artist dates. Writing morning pages is a practice of writing three pages each morning- not writing for anyone else to read, not writing to create something “good” or even creative, but simply a morning brain dump, an emptying out before the day begins. Artist dates are a weekly practice meant to awaken a sense of play, joy, inspiration, expression. They might include visiting an art museum or gallery, taking a trip to the zoo, playing at a playground, going for a walk in the woods- something that expands wonder.
Besides morning pages and artist dates, each week of The Artist’s Way also includes other activities to explore oneself, one’s life, one’s fear and blocking beliefs, one’s joys and sense of play. I will admit that having gone through the process twice, I still haven’t completed all the exercises- there is so much richness in them. And still I have made creative leaps. And I am curious to see what else might unfold if I re-enter the process of creative recovery with a group of other creative spirits.
I’ve done the process alone, and you certainly can, too, but I believe the process could be so much richer when done with a community of support.
This is why I’d like to invite you to journey with me. I am forming an Artist’s Way group for people seeking to explore, refresh, or begin their creative life. People who want to journey together through the 12 weeks of The Artist’s Way.
I will facilitate the group and the facilitated process will include:
7 (seven) facilitated gatherings every other Sunday afternoon from January 6 until March 31
The January 6 and March 31 meetings will be full afternoons, 12:00-5:00pm, to mark the beginning and ending of the 12-week process.
All other meetings (January 20, February 3 and 17, March 3 and 17) will be 2 hours, 1:00-3:00pm, with an option to come early at 12:15 to share a potluck meal together;
Weekly emails from me (Cory) with reminders, reflections, and suggestions for supplemental materials
A private Facebook group to share inspiration, joys, struggles, and discoveries
We will seek to create a community of support where we listen and don’t judge, where we are open to creativity without trying to control it in ourselves or others. As facilitator, I am not an all-knowing teacher. I will be participating in the process along with everyone else and will be encouraging the process, both for individuals and as we form a community together.
Space will be limited to 15 people.
To honor the time it takes to organize and facilitate a group process, I would request you pay $120 ($10/week), $240 ($20/week), or $360 ($30/week). Please consider mindfully what you are able to invest. However, I don’t want money to be a limiting factor, so please contact me if you’d like to discuss another arrangement.
A $30 nonrefundable deposit is required at the time of registration. To pay $120 or $240 in full at the time of registration, use coupon code, AW120 or AW240. No coupon code is required to pay $360. The balance is due on or before January 6.
